On January 31, 2000, an Air Alaska plane, flying from Puerto Valarta, Mexico, to San Francisco, California, experienced a mechanical failure during the flight.
The elevator trim jammed and the plane crashed into the sea.

The 88 people on board were killed. Later, the investigation showed that the disaster was due to serious negligence on the part of the airline. Two years earlier, a mechanic had requested in vain to replace the faulty part that caused the crash.
It is daylight, many planes are flying over the bay and see live the fall of the MD-80 in the colors of Alaska Airlines. The air traffic controller as well as many radio amateurs on the West Coast hear the comments live on the frequency:
– He dives, announces a witness
– He goes on his back, says another
– He just hit the water, it’s over sir
