If you want to get a good impression of life in the 17th and 18th century in Holland, you should visit the Zaanse Schans. In this area you can see the authentic houses, windmills, a tin factory, a cheese and dairy farm and other crafts. Both inside and outside you can see the old Zaan style.

The Zaanse Schans is a historic Zaanse neighborhood founded in 1963 in the municipality of Zaanstad with national monumental wooden buildings and industrial mills from the Zaan region relocated there.
Over time, it has been supplemented with various cultural-historical museums, craft shops and catering establishments.
It is located in the Kalverpolder, a protected peat meadow landscape on the Zaan, opposite the village of Zaandijk. This architectural reserve for Zaanse timber construction is a protected village view due to its architectural-historical and landscape value.
In 1952, at the Oud Zaandam exhibition in 1952, architect Jaap Schipper showed a model of what the Zaans Neighborhood could look like. Four types of buildings were distinguished in the model: buildings on the Zaanever, the buildings on the Zaandijk, the overtuin and the workers' houses on the other side of a drainage ditch opened up by quails.
The municipality and the province did not immediately agree. According to them, it lacked a 'Zaan map', the neighborhood was set up as a triangular village center without the characteristic comb structure of a dike ribbon with side paths and a view of the Kalverpolder. After adjustment, the plan

Occupancy of the buildings was made a condition by monument protection and the municipality stipulated a parking lot for tourists. The plan was approved in 1956. In 1957, the land was prepared for construction, a factory complex was demolished and purchased buildings were stored in a warehouse. The plan provided space for 43 buildings and a mill.

From 1963, many old wooden buildings from the Zaan region were brought to the Zaanse Schans expansion plan with low loaders and restored to their former glory. Transport by low-loader was preferred to preserve the wooden authenticity of a building as much as possible. However, concrete was chosen as the foundation instead of traditional wooden posts with caps. Long registration lists were created for the habitation of the neighborhood.
Around 1970 fifteen houses had been rebuilt.

Initially set up as a residential area, the neighborhood attracted more and more tourists that it was not designed for. Colonial Williamsburg was looked at as a tourist living neighborhood. Between 1970 and 1974, the plan was expanded with historic buildings (restaurant 'De Kraai', warehouse 'De Lelie' and 'De Bezem') and a few replicas suitable for catering and tourism. An extra car park was also built on the spot where a school was initially planned. From 1976 the Zaanse Schans became a tourist destination.

Some windmills have also been relocated. Only the substructure of the De Kat paint mill (originally an oil mill) and the Bonte Hen oil mill, as well as the De Os oil mill, still stand on their original grounds. Buildings were also regularly moved to the Zaanse Schans later on.

The Zaanse Schans is regularly used as a filming location. For example, recordings were made on the Kalverringdijk and in the grocery store of Albert Heijn for the episode Tante Truus for the series Tita Tovenaar (1972-1974). In August 1977, recordings were made for the series Pipo de Clown (Pipo en de Noorderzon) at the Zaanse Schans and at De Gekroonde Poelenburg. Not only are recordings made for television series, the Zaanse Schans is also used as a filming location for video clips such as Viva violin by K3. As part of the national arrival of Sinterklaas, several episodes of the Sinterklaas news were recorded in 2018.
According to local folklore, the locally honored Third Day of Pentecost reminds of the battle against the Spanish troops that was fought on the Schans on Whitsuntide in 1574. Whether the origin of the Zaanse Whit Monday is really related to this battle is not very certain. Elsewhere in the Netherlands (particularly in Zeeland) there is also a third day of Pentecost, which coincides with various local spring festivals.
A typical Zaan delicacy is the duivekater, a round, sweet white bread. In the bakery museum In de Gecroonde Duyvekater pigeon hangovers from two different Zaanse bakers are sold, both with different recipes.
