The primordial cow, Auðumbla, is one of the most important beings in Norse mythology. She is attested in the Prose Edda, and is said to have resided in Ginnungagap, the ‘Yawning Void’. The primordial Jötunn, Ymir, is said to have fed on her milk, and over the course of 3 days she licked away the salty rocks for nourishment, releasing the first Aesir God Búri, the grandfather of Odin, Villi and Vé, the later killers of Ymir. (on screen, the display Of Ymir's flesh was earth created, of his blood the sea, of his bones the hills, of his hair trees and plants, of his skull the heaven). Auðumbla is one of many legendary farm animals. Others include the Golden Calf in Judaism, the Kao bull in Manipuri mythology, Amalthea in Greek mythology, and the entire Zebu species of cow in Hinduism.
