The oldest protected natural area in Portugal (1971) is to be found in the northeast of Viana do Castelo at the border with Spain. Here lies the Peneda-Gerês National Park, also known as Gerês. The National Park protects mountains, rock formations, rivers, forests and lakes with many species of birds and reptiles but also wild horses. The park is located in the districts of Viana do Castelo and Braga. The park includes an area of 700 km2.
