What does an extractor and an ejector do? What is the difference?

These two terms are often confused by new gun owners. They have a similar goal, but are actually two very different components in a handgun.
The job of the extractor is to pull, or extract the empty brass casing from a fired cartridge out of the chamber. The ejector can then throw, or eject the casing out of the gun through the ejection port.
