The “temporary” flat rate home office expense deduction is continued into 2022. If you have worked from home 50% of the time for a period of time of at least 4 consecutive weeks during 2022 due to COVID, then you can deduct $2 a day to a maximum of $500 for the year.

You can also use the detailed method to deduct your home expenses. But, if you do that you need to calculate the actual costs and take a percentage, based on the part of the house you are using for your office. If you go with the detailed method then you need to get a T2200 from your employer. If you work from home and it is not due to COVID you can still take a home office deduction but the flat rate is not available to you. Plus, you need your employer to agree that you were working from home.

If you are not working from home because of COVID you may still be able to take a deduction for your home expenses but you need the T2200 form from your employer. Question 10 on that form is: Did you require the employee to use a portion of their home for work?  A no answer means no deduction for you, so you should work on your employer to get a yes answer.
