This is more important than ever if you are in not so good colleges. Start sharing whatever you are learning on LinkedIn or Twitter. Start connecting with your alumnis and seniors. Take up the Daily 5 Challenge: Message 5 people on LinkedIn/Twitter, Call 5 people, and Email 5 People everyday. You'll find so many opportunities this way.
I've wrote a complete book on how to use LinkedIn effectively as a student that you can find on amazon and Flipkart.
👉 Programming
This isn't mandatory but I think everyone should at least have a basic understanding of how code works. You can take up Harvard CS50 course for this. After learning about some DSA basics, start exploring web development, android development, machine learning and see which one do you like the most. Always try to build some mini projects along the way.
You can get yourself ready for programs like GSoC, Microsoft Learn Ambassador, Outreachy, etc
👉 Side Hustles
This can be a great time to learning creative skills such as video editing, photo editing, UI/UX, and others. Once you learn the skill, start looking out for clients through cold mailing or LinkedIn. Have patience.
👉 Don't Do This!
Don't focus on making money fast as soon as possible in first year of college. For internships, the reality is most people won't take you seriously and you might get exploited and end up doing unpaid work. I remember working 8hrs/day as an intern for 5K/month in first year. I ended up quitting that work after a week.
Invest your time in learning skills as much as possible and then building a portfolio that reflects your learnings.
👉 Conclusion
Last night, I was doing a livestream on the discord server where people were asking me "how did I manage to do all that I did?" I understand you might be inspired by what people like me on youtube have been able to accomplish. The reality of how I achieved everything is by having a lot of sacrifices in the first and second year of college. I didn't go out with friends for movies or to the beach, I made fewer friends, I spent a lot of time on my laptop all by myself just exploring things and reading books, I didn't focus on acads much and got 6CGPA, I didn't celebrate much on occasions. Now when I look back, I think I could've chilled out a bit more. Doing what I did takes a lot of courage and might even be un healthy for most people. But I wanted it all bad enough, so I went all in.
