Another round of our DNA series! Last week we showed you how to get the concentration of DNA in a sample. But it is also important to know how big these pieces of DNA are 📏. Especially if you run a PCR and want to know whether it worked correctly ✅.
For this, using agarose gel electrophoresis…or separating DNA in a kind of jelly with the help of an electric field… is a very common technique in a molecular biology lab to analyze pieces of DNA. The agarose gel (or jelly) is separating DNA pieces by length. Shorter DNA moves faster⏩, longer DNA moves slower▶️. Sometimes you need to analyze a lot of samples 😰. In that case loading a huge gel like this with a multichannel pipette is really helpful! 😌
If we see that the piece of DNA appears to have the right size, we can continue working with this sample👩🏻‍🔬…if not…well, try the whole experiment again 😣

Have a nice Thursday! 👋
