قدیمی ترین نقش در نقش رستم مربوط به دوره ایلام است که بعدها توسط بهرام دوم پاک شد و نقش او و درباریانش جایگزین آن شد، اما بخشی از نقش قبلی دست نخورده باقی مانده است و تا حدودی با نقش برجسته می توان آن را شناخت. کورنگان.
آنچه از این نقش باقی مانده است نشان می دهد که دو الهه و الهه با پایه های خود به شکل مارهای پیچیده روی تخت نشسته اند و افراد دیگری در سمت راست و چپ آنها ایستاده اند.
درباره پیشینه و سابقه این نقش نظرات مختلفی وجود دارد. ارنست هرتسفلد و هیدماری کخ قدمت آن را به 4000 سال پیش می‌گذارند، اما شاپور شهبازی معتقد است که شکل کلاه شاه و تاج ملکه شبیه به 800 تا 600 سال قبل از میلاد است. از سوی دیگر، تاج و تخت الهه و قدمت الهه که به شکل مار است به حدود 1200 سال قبل از میلاد می رسد، مانند نقشه برجسته کورنگان. از این رو نقاشی های ایلامی نقش رستم در دو دوره مختلف حکاکی شده است. عیسی بهنام نیز تاریخ این نقوش را در حدود 1200 سال قبل از میلاد می داند.
