Does anyone remember the Pirate Bay? It seems like a bit of a silly question. I mean, it only remained as one of the top file-sharing websites in the world for the duration of an entire decade, dominating the 2000s as the go-to BitTorrent search engine. But one Tuesday morning would change everything. People would wake up to find the most popular and controversial online index for entertainment seized by the Swedish government, completely wiped off the face of the earth, left with absolutely nothing but a bleak outlook on the website’s future. With the website’s founders now in jail, people didn’t know if the Pirate Bay was ever coming back or if it’s only remnants would be unreliable, dangerous site clones. Was this the end of mainstream online piracy? The answer to this question would be answered just a month later, when the website would just go back up, featuring a countdown, with operations immediately resuming as normal immediately after.

Lots of people stared at their computer screens puzzled as to how this could even happen. The Pirate Bay, against all odds, defeated the internet, putting its foot down to make the message very clear that online piracy was here to stay. But when you really start to delve into how the Pirate Bay operates, it becomes much clearer. The website’s design is not only ingenuous, but culturally influential. It has allowed it to challenge the corporate system and the entertainment industry. The Pirate Bay, in many ways, changed the way we use the internet, and likely will continue to do so. But how? A website that has been on the run from several governments, that has spent years finding every possible legal loophole they can to stay alive, is finally caught red-handed, having all their resources depleted and their owners put behind bars, only for it to show back up once again. The Pirate Bay had achieved immortality. Right? Well…maybe not. Despite the site’s confident and glorious return, things haven’t really been the same ever since. Many people have called out clear changes about the site since its return, alleging that it’s not what it used to be. So, did the Pirate Bay ever really return, or are we currently all being fooled?
