RANGERS V BENFICA - Reaction from Ibrox to Europa League Last 16 Draw.

Adam Binnie reports from Ibrox after were Rangers were drawn against Benfica in the UEFA Europa League.

Transcription:
Benfica yesterday earned a nil-nil draw with Toulouse away from home, meaning their 2-1 victory from the first leg was enough for them to make it through to the last 16 to face Rangers. Of course, they're top of Liga Portuguesa just now, and you would think in normal circumstances that would be a really, really tough draw for Rangers.

But if you look at their record against Portuguese teams over the years, then Rangers fans will have nothing to fear. They've played 22 matches against Portuguese opposition over the years; they've won 11 of those, seven draws, and just four defeats.

Of those four defeats, only one of them actually resulted in Rangers exiting the competition. That was way back in the 1983-84 European Cup Winners' Cup campaign; a defeat to Porto saw them exit the competition. Apart from that, even in recent years, Rangers have shone against Portuguese opposition.

They've defeated Braga twice in the knockout stages of this competition in recent years. Of course, remember they had Porto in their group in the 2018-19 season, beating them and earning a draw in that campaign, as well as Benfica the following season in the 2020-21 campaign, where they actually were two-nil up in one game, ended up being two each, three-nil up in, sorry, three-one up in another game, and that ending three all in that one.

Now, the games will be played on the seventh and 14th of March. Rangers will be away from home in the first leg, then will return to Ibrox in the second leg. If they can get a positive result or even just a one-goal defeat in that first leg, they'll absolutely fancy their chances here back at Ibrox Stadium for the second leg because Rangers have never ever lost to a Portuguese team at Ibrox.

They will play Hibs in between the two legs, in the Scottish cup, and then they will play against Dundee away from home in the league just after that second leg. So on the face of it, a really, really tough draw, but I think the Rangers fans will fancy their chances against another Portuguese side.
