Torrenting Overview
Torrenting is when you download or upload files through the BitTorrent network. It's a unique system in that it's peer to peer - that means that you are downloading another person's upload and when you upload, you're uploading directly to somebody else's download.
People who upload are referred to as seeders and downloaders are called leechers.
The more seeders there are, the faster people can download the files.
Torrenting is often associated with Piracy because many people use it to download copyrighted movies and music.
However, the act of torrenting is completely legal when using it for non-copyrighted file transfers. When using torrents, just be careful what you download and make sure you are not breaking any copyright or piracy laws.
In order to download a torrent file, you will need to have a torrent client. Some of the most popular ones are transmission, qbit torrent, and deluge, but my favorite is Folx.
The three aside from Folx are all great options - they are all open source, lightweight torrent clients that accomplish all the basics you would want in a torrent client.
Folx Pros
In regards to Folx, a separating feature for me is the ability to search for torrents directly from inside the app. Just head up to the search bar and type in what you're looking for, no need to go to a specific website to get what you need.
Folx also has one of the best organization systems out there. Each download is tagged and organized into specific areas based on their tags so you can easily find everything.
Create Your Own Torrent File
Folx also allows you to create torrent files quite easily so you can share with others - in order to create a torrent, go to file → create torrent file.
From there you will need to select the source file, and then add a tracker to it. You can grab a tracker by heading to google and searching for a public or private torrent tracker to use.
Then just give the file a name for the people who are downloading it, and you can leave the "save to" and "piece size" to automatic.
Click ok, and now you can open the tracker of your choice and upload your newly created torrent file.
Folx Pro
Now, if you really wanna get the most out of Folx, you should check out Folx Pro.
It offers some amazing quality of life features like scheduling your downloads, remembering your login and passwords for FTP and HTTP websites, as well as giving you a YouTube video and mp3 downloader.
All these are amazing features, but I have to say that my favorite is the integration with Apple's Music App, formeraly known as iTunes.
You can tell Folx to automatically transfer all your downloaded music and videos to the Music App. No more fiddling with the finder app to search for where your latest download went.
This is a great quality of life feature to have that reduces the friction of getting your downloaded media into the Music App.
