The Poet: Shaikh Muhammad Ibrahim شیخ محمد ابراہیم ذوق (takhallus: Zauq ذوق) was born in 1789 in Delhi دہلی, India. His father, Shaikh Muhammad Ramzan شیخ محمد رمضان, was a soldier in the Mughal Army. At a young age, he was sent to a school run by Hafiz Ghulam Rasool حافظ غلام رسول, who was a poet and used the takhallus Shauq شوق. Zauq developed interest in poetry at that school. After he left that school, he had Shah Naseer شاہ نصیر as his poetry teacher. Later on, the two developed some differences. One of Zauqs friends, Meer Kazim Hussain Beqarar میر کاظم حسین بیقرار, was appointed the tutor of Crown Prince Zafar ظفر
(who later became the Emperor). Through him Zauq became known to Zafar. He later became the poetry teacher of the Crown Prince, the position he maintained after Bahadur Shah Zafar بہادر شاہ ظفر became the Emperor.

Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869 )  was his contemporary. Both had at times professional rivalries, as both tried to gain the favor of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Contrary to Ghalib, Zauq was a deeply religious man. It was perhaps due to this reason that Zauq got preference over Ghalib as Zafar was himself a religious man. Zauq remained attached to the Mughal Court until his death in 1854. Much of his poetry was lost in the tragic events of 1857. Muhammad Hussain Azad  محمد حسین آزاد  gathered a small his poetry and published it (containing over a thousand ghazals). Zauq has at times used difficult meters. He also wrote panegyrical poems.

The Singer: Kundan Lal (K.L.) Sehgal کندن لال سہگل was born on 11 April 1904 in Jammu, Jammu & Kashmir. His father, Amar Chand, was a tehsildar (a sub-division administrator). Ethnically he was a Punjabi and his ancestors had immigrated from Jalandhar, Punjab. He had to drop out of school at a young age and he worked as a timekeeper in the Railways. Then he worked as a salesman for a typewriter company. Then he moved to Lahore and became a good friend of Meharchand Jain. The two friends then moved to Calcutta. He briefly worked as a hotel manager. It was Meharchand who helped his friend start his singing career, also helping him with money.

He formally started his singing career in 1930 by signing up for a studio in Calcutta. He also acted in a few Urdu and Bengali moves movies. His break came with his acting in Devdas (1935). He continued his careers as an actor and as a playback singer. In 1941 he moved to Bombay.  Unfortunately, he became addicted to alcohol which effected both his health and his movie career. He passed away in Jalandhar, Punjab, on 18 January 1947, about 3 months short of his 43rd birthday. He is truly a pioneer of Twentieth Century singing in India and Pakistan.
