A dozen Iranian security forces in riot helmets savagely kick and beat a man with truncheons. As the security forces begin to depart on motorbikes, an officer fires a shotgun at the man lying prostrate and motionless on the ground, apparently into his face. Video of the attack, which reportedly occurred last month during the brutal crackdown on protesters angered by the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of morality police, was shared online on Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage over its casual brutality. The video is so shocking that Iran’s police force – perhaps fearful of it fueling further public anger – announced on Wednesday that it had opened an investigation to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators. "A special order was immediately issued to investigate the exact time and place of the incident and identify the offenders," the police announced in a statement published by state news agency IRNA. "The police absolutely do not approve of violent and unconventional behaviour and will deal with the offenders according to the rules," the statement added. Since nationwide anti-government protests erupted over six weeks ago, Iranian authorities have tightly curtailed internet access in a bid to stop protesters organising and to prevent footage of its crackdown reaching a wider audience.
