1st MRSAM regiment in Eastern Theatre

In major boost to its air defence capabilities, Indian Army has established its first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) Regiment in the Eastern Theatre. The regiment has been equipped with the indigenous MRSAM Weapon System, also known as the ‘Abhra’ Weapon System. The 2nd squadron of S400 is also deployed in east theatre close to Siliguri Corridor, also known as the Chicken’s Neck. MRSAM and S-400 are both best in its class which is going to fortify the Indian airspace against Chinese aggression.

MRSAM Support

During Aero India 2023, Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to form a joint venture to provide long-term product support services to the Indian Defence Forces through a single point of contact. A new joint venture is being established to provide lifecycle support for the country’s MRSAM (Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile) air defence system. It will be headquartered in New Delhi and provide the required technical and maintenance support to the armed forces.

Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM)

MRSAM is an Indo-Israeli jointly developed surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, designed to defend against any type of airborne threat. More than 70 per cent of the content in the missile being developed with Israel is indigenous. MRSAM is a land-based configuration of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defence system. The propulsion system, coupled with a thrust vector control system, allows the missile to move at a maximum speed of Mach 2. The weapon has the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously at ranges of 70km.

MRSAM Regiment

One MRSAM regiment including 16 firing units. Each firing unit comprises of Missiles, Combat Management System (CMS), Mobile Launcher Systems (MLS), Advanced Long-Range Radar, Mobile Power System (MPS), Radar Power System (RPS), Reloader Vehicle (RV) and Field Service Vehicle (FSV). Each launcher will have eight missiles in two stacks and are launched in a canister configuration.

18 Regiments for IAF

Indian Air Force has planned to acquire total 18 squadrons of MRSAM. The first of the 18 squadron of the MRSAM was delivered to IAF on September 9, 2021. The Jaisalmer-based 2204 Squadron, the ‘Invincibles’, became the first unit in the Indian Air Force (IAF) to be equipped with the MRSAM.

BDL has setup a new production facility in Hyderabad with an investment of $100m to manufacture both MRSAM and LRSAM missiles. The facility has the capacity to produce 100 missiles a year.
