The history of Naughty Dog goes back a lot farther than Uncharted. Naughty Dog began as the passion project of Jason Ruby and Andy Gavin, two teenagers who grew it into the world-glass video game developer it is today. The early Naughty Dog games were primitive by today’s standards, but in the ‘90s they got they first big break on the brand-new Sony Playstation console. Crash Bandicoot was a gorgeous, cartoony 3D platformer that broke the mold from traditional 2D sidescrollers. While it might not be as influential as Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64, Crash Bandicoot and its sequels, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Crash Bandicoot: Warped and even Crash Team Racing set a high standard for vibrant 3D graphics and platforming action on the Sony PSX.

Crash Bandicoot was just the start for Naughty Dog history. For the Sony Playstation 2, Naughty Dog created a new franchise to showcase the power of the Sony PS2: Jak and Daxter. Starting with Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, every Jak and Daxter sequel got progressively darker and edgier, until the series was cancelled with the movie to the Sony Playstation 3. They toyed with the idea of a Jak and Daxter reboot or Jak and Daxter remake, but instead Naughty Dog decided to try their hand at photorealistic graphics for their new series. It was codenamed Project: Big but we all know it today as Uncharted. Starring Nolan North as Nathan Drake and created by writer Amy Hennig, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was a giant leap forward for Naughty Dog in terms of graphical power and cinematic presentation, and it set a new standard for cinematic games, thanks to the power of the Sony PS3.

Nathan Drake, Sully, Elena, Chloe Frazer, and Nadine Ross are just some of the incredible characters Henning and Naughty Dog created for the Uncharted series, and thanks to the awesome Uncharted performance capture, these video game characters have never felt more real. And for their next trick, Naughty Dog would dial down the fun adventure of Uncharted for the lonely apocalyptic world of The Last of Us. Joel and Ellie are some of the most tragic, heartbreaking characters in video game history, all thanks to Naughty Dog’s incredible writing and two unforgettable performances from Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. Now that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy has arrived, the next Naughty Dog game we have to look forward to is The Last of Us: Part 2. After that, we have no clue what Naughty Dog will do next, but one thing is for certain: It’ll look incredible, have an unforgettable story, and just be an amazing game. If there’s one thing we learned from Naughty Dog history, it’s that they don’t make bad games.
