From studio gopher to global superstar, Jon Bon Jovi spent years chasing his big break. Working the club circuit as an underage teenager, Jon was shocked one night when his musical idol Bruce Springsteen jumped on stage and started duetting with him! Actually, he was singing The Boss's song at the time. Pretty cool. Later when Bon Jovi finally got a demo for his song Runaway recorded, he was rejected by every record label in the biz. And he thought that maybe it was time to call it quits. But in a last-ditch effort, he decided to sneak into a New York radio station and pitch Runaway straight to the DJ… The DJ ended up playing it and virtually overnight the song was a hit and set this singer up for a record label and a major tour… the only problem was Jon didn’t even have a band!  Up next, the story of Jon Bon Jovi’s tenacity, and how he formed a band after Runaway hit it big and transformed a would-be pop idol into a hard rock icon NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success.  I gotta tell you, I’ve been watching the Bon Jovi Documentary on HULU and I’m Blown away at Jon Bon Jovi’s drive and tenacity… He really deserves all of his success. But it’s interesting because Jon almost went a totally different route… as a rookie he was startling the fence between pop and rock… Today we tell the story of what took him from a would-be pop idol to a hard rock icon, with the story of their 1984 debut, Runaway.

So Bon Jovi was formed in 1983 in New Jersey, but our story actually begins before that… back when lead singer Jon Bon Jovi was still known by his given name John with an “H” Bongiovi. Jon started getting into music big-time while he was a teenager, attending Sayreville High School in New Jersey. There he joined nine other musicians to form a Rhythm and Blues cover band called Atlantic City Expressway… Among others, the ten-piece covered songs from New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny… played at clubs along the Jersey Shore, and this even though they were underage.

Actually, in 1979 Jon and the band were even joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen himself while singing the Boss’s song Promised Land… One minute Jon was up there performing and the next he looked over, and there he was — Bruce Springsteen — on stage singing along.   Going back to high school the next day, Jon was walking on air. The impossible felt possible. And he realized that nothing mattered but the music. Forget math class. Forget all the high school drama.
