The Future of Academic Advising in Higher Education
Today’s college students face challenges that are very different from a generation ago. How can higher education help them stay on track? Increasingly, research is pointing to the power of data-enabled, proactive advising.

In 2016, the UIA launched a randomized control trial study of proactive, predictive analytics-enabled advising for first-generation and Pell-eligible students across 11 campuses. In this forum hosted by Ian Wilhelm, a Chronicle assistant managing editor, and Bridget Burns, our chief executive officer, a panel of nationally regarded experts discuss insights from the UIA's recently released Proactive Advising Playbook and examine how colleges can better serve all students, particularly, those from first-gen and low-income backgrounds, through improved academic advising.

▶ Arne Duncan, former U.S. secretary of education and Chicago superintendent of schools
▶ CJ Powell, special assistant in the Office of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education
