GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: This video contains graphic images of a surgical procedure. Gabriel Del Corral, MD, a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon with the MedStar Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery team at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, performs a DIEP flap breast reconstruction and a breast augmentation on a breast cancer survivor. During the DIEP flap breast reconstruction, blood vessels called deep inferior epigastric perforators (DIEP), as well as the skin and fat connected to them, are removed from the lower abdomen and connected using microsurgery, to the chest to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy. One benefit to this form of reconstruction is a flatter abdomen, with results that mimic a “tummy tuck” procedure. For more information on DIEP flap breast reconstruction, or for media interviews with Dr. Del Corral, call Debra Schindler, regional media & public relations director for MedStar Health in Baltimore at 410-274-1260.
