🌍 The sun and planets were born from the explosion of a star. The sun is the biggest part of it. The stardust that surrounded this big part began to spin, spin, spin around this big ball, condensed and clumped to form nine planets.
The 4 planets closest to the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They are rocky planets. Scientifically they are called telluric planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gaseous planets. They consist of a rocky core surrounded by liquid.

🔥 As a reminder, videos are published on SUNDAYS at 6:00 pm.

💥 THE SOLAR SYSTEM:
- We call Solar System, the set of stars subject to the gravitational field of the Sun (our star alone represents 99.8% of the total mass of the Solar System!). The Solar System evolves in one of the arms of our spiral galaxy, the Milky Way, some 26,000 light years from its center. According to definitions established by the International Astronomical Union, our Solar System includes:

Eight planets -- and their natural satellites; there are more than 175 known -- which are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, in order of distance from the Sun. The first four are called telluric planets, the last four, gaseous planets.
Dwarf planets like Pluto or Ceres.
Several hundred thousand asteroids composed of rocks and metallic minerals mainly. Their size is extremely variable, from several hundred kilometers to grains of dust. They are mostly grouped in the main asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter.
Thousands of comets composed of dust and volatile ice.
Countless small icy bodies like the Centaurs -- which orbit between Jupiter and Neptune -- or the trans-Neptunian objects in the distant Kuiper Belt.

Beyond the Kuiper Belt is a gigantic collection of icy bodies called the Oort cloud. Its outer limit would mark the limit of the Sun's gravitational influence. Astronomers estimate that it is somewhere between 1.6 and 2 light-years -- or between 101,186 and 126,482 astronomical units -- from our star! But the heliosphere -- that bubble created by the solar winds -- does not extend that far. The interstellar medium interrupts it in a direction about 100 astronomical units away, or only about 0.002 light-years.

Note that the Solar System probably still holds surprises for astronomers. Some regions such as the area between the Sun and Mercury are still poorly known. The orbits of several trans-Neptunian objects suggest that a ninth planet, perhaps 4 times larger than the Earth and 10 times more massive, could be hiding at the edges of our Solar System, between 500 and 1,200 astronomical units from the Sun.

Jupiter impresses by its size and the storms that never cease to rage on its surface. The gas giant has been observed by astronomers since antiquity, yet many unknowns remain about its nature and those of its moons. Mysteries that the American mission Juno begins to elucidate, soon completed by the European JUICE.
