First stage of our trip, the 200 kilometers separating Tadoussac from Baie-Comeau. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes for this trip, but like us, if you try the adventure, you may stop many times because the landscape is spectacular.

By taking route 389, you will cross several hydro-electric dams. First, you will see the Manic-2 dam. Stop before crossing the bridge in front of the dam to admire this imposing construction of Quebec engineering and enjoy the breathtaking landscape.

Next, you will come across the René-Lévesque power station, formerly known as Manic-3. Located nearly 75 km from the mouth of the Manicouagan River, the dam is 107 meters high. Commissioned in 1975, its head is 94 meters, which allows it, with its six turbines, to produce 1,244 mega watts.

Finally, at the end of some 215 kilometers of road, we visit the most impressive architectural work in Quebec, Manic-5, one of the main energy production sites in Quebec. Inaugurated in 1968, this building is named after former Quebec premier Daniel Johnson, who tragically died on the site the morning of its inauguration.

The dam is 1.3 kilometers long. With its 13 vaults and 14 buttresses, it is the largest dam of its kind in the world. The central arch is 165 meters high, the equivalent of the tower of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Historically, the construction of the Manic-5 power station and the Daniel-Johnson dam was part of the Quiet Revolution, a key period in the national affirmation of Quebecers.

Visits to the dam and the museum are free of charge and various departures are scheduled daily during the summer. It is however necessary to reserve your place rather quickly.

We completed our first day with a visit of Baie-Comeau. A walk in the Parc des Pionniers will allow you to stroll down to the river. The view is exceptional. It is clearly a must-see when visiting the city.

The next day, we made a few nice stops on our way, notably at Pointe-aux-Outardes, Portneuf-sur-mer, Forestville and Longue-Rive.

We complete this journey with a cruise on the sea to admire the whales. For several years, tourists from all over the world have been flocking to Tadoussac or Bergeronnes to discover the largest land mammals. For our part, we chose to leave from Les Escoumins aboard a zodiac.

We were lucky to see countless specimens, including a few humpback whales and fin whales, a whale that can measure up to 24 meters and weigh from 40 to 85 tons. It is the second largest whale in the world after the blue whale.
