The daffodil or narcissus flower has many associations in folklore and mythology of Europe and is synonymous with Easter and the Spring equinox.

Associated with the goddess of Spring and Dawn, Ostara or Eostre in English, Anglo Saxon and Germanic mythology and folklore.

And the goddess Eos and Aurora.

In classical mythology the flower is also associated with Persephone, daughter of Ceres / Demeter, who was captured by Hades / Pluto god of the underworld.

She returns for six months of the year, so heralding the coming of spring and summer in a seasonal cycle with parallels in many other world and Indo-European mythologies and stories as well as the story of Narcissus and the nymph Echo.

In magic and folklore the flower is associated with good luck, abundance, prosperity, fertility and love.

In Britain and Ireland the flower is often associated with Celtic Christanity, and saint David, the patron saint of Wales and is often growing in the grounds of monasteries and churchyards.
