The Quran refers to those who guard their private parts except when it comes to their spouses or "those whom their right hands possess". Dr. Shabir Ally explains that this term was introduced in the Quran and wasn't widely used in society. He references Mohammed Asad, in his translation and commentary on the Quran, who says the 'or' may be used to suggest another way of referring to the same thing, so the term could mean 'your husband or your wife', because one has some ownership claim over one's spouse. Dr. Shabir extends the argument further, explaining difficulties encountered when taking the verse literally and offering a contextual analysis. He concludes by explaining that there is no verse in the Quran that says if a man owns a female slave, he has a right to go to bed with her.
