It would have taken eight months to travel from Mali to Cairo in Egypt, the last stop in Africa before the final push into the deserts of Arabia and then Mecca.

Before departing on his journey, he sent 500 slaves ahead of him to meet the Sultan in Cairo. Each slave carried a golden staff which altogether would have weighed nearly a ton.

His caravan also included 100 camels each of them carrying 300 pounds of gold. Altogether, that would have been in 15 tons of gold.

Of course, his caravan would have also included hundreds of camels to carry supplies and equipment. There are different estimates about how many people traveled with Mansa Musa on this pilgrimage.

The numbers range is between 20000 and 60000 with many of them being slaves and soldiers. The fact that there were so many slaves indicates that Mansa Musa had conquered a lot of territory during his reign.
