Land grading, also known as yard grading or yard leveling, helps to reshape the ground’s surface.

This action is often done to prepare for new construction projects; although, it is also sometimes done on properties where the drainage is destroying the foundation of the structures.

You may consider land grading for any of the following issues.

To prepare for landscaping
To make an addition to your home
To build a new home
To create a new driveway
To add a concrete patio
To correct a drainage problem
To stop soil erosion

In this video, we’ll talk more about land grading and what you should know.

When I was working for New York City my department was tasked with trying to help develop small, difficult to develop lots around the city. We saw just about everything: incredibly narrow sites, contaminated rock, flooded lots, old parking lots and so on. But there was one site that made even my group pause. The site was an infill lot next to a single family home. While it was nominally considered vacant by the building department it did have one very prominent inhabitant; a giant, three-story boulder. Did we make the project work? I'll let you know at the end of this video. But it should be said that this sort of obstacle was not entirely uncommon now. This photo here is not of the site itself but it does show a very similar situation for rock has been one of the primary obstacles of Manhattan Development since the city was first founded. In fact the city grid itself had to be cut from hills of bedrock. Sometimes, leaving homes up in the air. Fortunately, not all building sites have to contend with such complicated site features but even a relatively level lot still requires some preparation prior to construction. And in this video we'll go over some of the top things that you should know about land grading.

Number one
Land grading is when you make the ground level as the name would suggest. And this is usually done to prepare a site for construction but sometimes it will also be done for extensive landscaping projects or other site infrastructure like a driveway or parking lot.

Number two
Land grading involves several steps. What will actually be involved in your particular project depends on the characteristics of your site and what sort of work has already been done. But land grading may involve all or some of the following points: the removal of existing topsoil leveling slopes, filling in low spots or depressions, adding new topsoil when slopes have been leveled, or filling in compacting the new soil then smoothing the building pad or site and hauling away any excess dirt.

Number three
Land grading can protect your foundation land. Lading is about making a level building pad so that building construction can begin. But it is also done in order to alter existing slopes to protect your foundation from water. So often land grading changes the topography of the site immediately around the building so that water flows away from the foundation if the water flows to the foundation and pools around it you are going to see damage to the foundation water infiltration and potential settlement. Thus even on a site that is already fairly flat you will want to do some land grading in order to ensure that your foundation is protected from water and will remain stable and structurally sound for years to come. If you're curious about the cost of land grading, according to thumbtack.com the average cost for leveling the site for a new home foundation is between fifteen hundred and six thousand dollars. But of course the cost is going to vary widely and the aforementioned cost projection likely assumes that the land is already fairly level. This leads us to..

Number four
There are many factors that impact the cost of land grading. At a high level the cost is based on the amount of time it will take for your contractor to...
